TGfU
Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU)
The TGfU Approach
The TGfU approach focuses on helping students learn key fundamental movement skills and strategies that they can apply to a wide range of physical activities. TGfU is a learner-centred approach that puts the needs and abilities of the participants first, hopefully increasing the students enjoyment and participation, levels. The approach focuses on playing a variety of games that fit four themes, instead of specific sports skills. The four themes are:
-
Target Games – an object is sent, preferably with a high degree of accuracy, at a target.
-
Net/Wall Games – participants send an object into space (over a net or off a wall) and try to make it difficult for an opponent to return it.
-
Striking/Fielding Games – players strike an object, trying to place it away from defenders in the field.
-
Territory Games – participants need to invade an opponent's territory to score. The defending team tries to stop them from scoring.
Games that fit into these categories have a lot of similar rules and strategies. The skills are often transferable from one game to the other. For example, moving to open space is important in Territory Games as you invade the other team's defensive zone. Think of games like soccer, hockey and basketball, where teammates need to get open to receive a pass near the other team's goal.
